What should a machine have before experience begins?
DARWIN ZERO starts before trained expertise, before semantic catalogues and before task-specific policies.
The question is not how to make a system perform a predefined task, but what minimal internal structure allows experience to become a source of persistent change.
The project begins at the point where a machine has no acquired representation of the world, but still needs enough internal organization to act, sense, preserve traces and change over time.

DARWIN ZERO starts from a small set of interacting conditions that allow an artificial system to regulate, act, perceive consequences and change over time.
Internal regulation
The system maintains internal variables that influence its state, pressure for action and future behavior.
Action
The system is not only evaluated through outputs. It acts, changes its situation and creates new conditions for perception.
Consequence perception
The system must perceive the effects of its own actions, not only receive isolated signals.
Cumulative change
Interaction must leave persistent structural effects that can alter future prediction, selection and behavior.
From isolated behavior to cumulative autonomy.
A single behavior is not autonomy. DARWIN ZERO approaches autonomy as a cumulative process: the system acts, undergoes consequences, preserves structural traces, and changes the conditions of its future behavior.
The goal is to build systems whose development is not reduced to a fixed policy or a one-time response, but emerges through repeated cycles of regulation, action, perception and transformation.
In this sense, autonomy is not treated as a label applied at the end. It is treated as an architecture that must make change possible from within.
Built as an experimental substrate.
DARWIN ZERO is developed as a working architecture, not as a static theory. Each layer is built to be isolated, tested, observed and revised.
Controlled construction
The architecture is built through controlled software experiments that separate internal regulation, action, perception, prediction and structural change before integrating them into larger loops.

The public website presents the strategic direction. Deeper technical material, controlled demonstrations and implementation details can be shared after first contact.
